Un café dans une jolie petite ville des environs de Paris. Comme dans un roman de Simenon, s’y retrouve une clientèle d’habitués, des gens simples avec leurs problèmes, leurs chagrins, leurs histoires de cœur. Frédérique, la postière, une incorrigible coquette. La jeune boulangère Adèle, éprise d’un étudiant en médecine. Olivier, le dessinateur d’un bureau d’études voisin, amoureux malchanceux d’Adèle…, et les autres.
Un soir de pluie, une inconnue pousse la porte du café. Cette femme au prénom trompeur (elle se fait appeler Ange), étrange plutôt que belle, va jeter le trouble au milieu de ce petit monde. Une relation se noue bientôt entre elle et le patron de l’établissement, entraînant cet homme tranquille dans une passion potentiellement destructrice.

(Au Café du canal, un soir de pluie)
« Il est presque huit heures maintenant et l’averse n'a pas l'air de vouloir s'arrêter. Elle redouble, au contraire c’est un martèlement furieux sur l’asphalte et sur le gravier. François commence à se dire qu'il ne viendra plus personne, que les gens qui sont là ne vont pas s'éterniser et qu'il pourra enfin aller se coucher…
Et puis elle entre. Il croyait l'avoir oubliée, mais son image devait flotter quelque part dans sa mémoire car, bien qu'il n'ait d'abord aperçu, se glissant derrière le battant, que l'épaule de sa veste, il a tout de suite su que c'était elle la fille de l’autre jour, la fille de la terrasse.
Après avoir refermé la porte, elle s’arrête un instant sur le seuil. Elle n’a pas d’imperméable, et pas non plus de parapluie ; ses cheveux ne sont protégés que par un de ces morceaux de plastique transparent pliés en accordéon qu'on trouve dans les Monoprix. Sa frange noire est mouillée, des gouttes de pluie ruissellent sur son front et sur ses joues. Elle retire sa capuche, la secoue sur le paillasson de l’entrée, paraît hésiter. Une fraction de seconde, François a l'impression qu'elle le cherche ; leurs regards se croisent, aussitôt détournés. Puis la fille enfonce sa capuche dans sa poche et va s'asseoir sur la banquette, au coin de la vitre, tout au fond de la salle vide.
François est déjà près d'elle
– Bonsoir… Vous voulez vous sécher ?
– Non merci, ça ira.
– Je peux vous prêter un séchoir, si vous voulez… un séchoir à main. Il y a une prise dans les toilettes.
– Ça va sécher tout seul.
Elle s'essuie le visage avec un kleenex. Les épaules de sa veste sont trempées, leurs épaulettes doivent être gorgées d'eau comme des éponges.
– Enlevez au moins votre veste, vous pourriez attraper du mal.
– Apportez-moi un demi.
Elle a levé la tête pour demander sa bière. Quelque chose de vague, de voilé dans ses yeux fait penser à François que ce n'est pas la première de la soirée. Ses yeux sont gris, songe-t-il en se dirigeant vers le bar; la dernière fois il les avait vus bleus. »

Après des études de Lettres et quelques bonnes années au département Cinéma de l’université Vincennes-Paris 8, Michèle Abramoff a travaillé à la télévision, puis dans le cinéma et dans la publicité. Elle collabore ponctuellement au magazine Service littéraire et au magazine en ligne BIBLIOBS.
Depuis toujours elle partage son temps entre ses activités professionnelles et l’écriture de romans, sa véritable vocation. Comme romancière, elle se range dans la catégorie des "raconteurs d’histoires". Observatrice attentive des comportements, elle montre une réelle capacité pour créer une atmosphère et faire vivre des personnages.

I was drawn quickly into the plot and the characters. Michèle Abramoff has crafted a story reminiscent of some of Simenon's "psychological novels" in which the two principal characters unveil themselves.Le café du canal was quite a page-turner by the end as it was, like Simenon's work, not at all predictable.
Even as a rather fluent reader of French, I required my Larousse as well as Google fairly often. This was principally due to the dialog between characters which was colloquial and even slang at times. As anyone who has watched French films or been to a Francophone area knows, there is quite a difference between ordinary spoken French and the hyper correct version we learn in school.

A bit melancholy, with realistic characters but a pleasant reading. I might have liked a different ending but all in all, it is well written and you identify with most of the situation.
It's all about the interesting, quirky and challenging lives of current-day characters. Well thought out and engagingly presented. And, Paris and environs as the setting. A compelling read! I'll look for more by Abramoff.
well written;the writer is good and makes a banal story interesting, till the end .Some cliches but also a good understanding of the way men act and react.
I would not call this a "sentimental " story but "you never know.." or "a sentimental journey "
LE CAFÉ DU CANAL - Une histoire sentimentale (French Edition) Café du Canal is a very inviting place where I would not mind to sip a glass of wine and eat the food cooked by the owner. The latter and his patrons are very interesting characters, as is the mysterious Ange.
Well written French, interesting enough of a story, a good bit beyond the cliched romance novel, gives you insight into ordinary French lives, and also an extraordinary one or two. I enjoyed it, learned some argot (slang), and traveled in a circle for the space of the book, that I'd otherwise not have. I liked the author"s writing and the story enough to immediately order another novel by Michele Abramoff which I also enjoyed and will be happy to report on as well.
I am reading it still but so far, I really like it. The characters are very likable, the relationship between the cafe owner, François and Ange is well developed and romantic and the portrait of life in a French cafe is a good insight into life there, where not everyone is a fashion model or a Romeo, but just regular people with problems and dreams. It is a little hard for my level of French (one year), but with my dictionary, I am able to push through it.
A good read for someone trying to regain his facility in French. Present tense, not terribly metaphorical/poetic but colorful and insightful. With the 's built-in French dictionary, a useful and very satisfying exercise. Fully realized characters and a story that has some suspense without any bogus plot twists. I will read more of this lady's books!
